500 years ago this October saw the dawn of the Reformation, as a faithful few rediscovered and re-emphasized the liberating truths of the gospel.  The Reformers were guided by the conviction that the church of their day had drifted away from the essential, original teachings of  Christianity, especially in regard to what it was teaching about salvation–how people can be forgiven of sin through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and receive eternal life with God. The Reformation sought to re-orient Christianity on the original message of Jesus and the early church.

The Five  “Alones” or “Solas” were five Latin phrases (or slogans) that emerged during the Reformation to summarize the Reformers’ theological convictions about the essentials of Christianity:                 

  • Scripture alone
  • Grace alone
  • Faith alone
  • Christ alone
  • God alone be the glory

The 5 Solas will be the subject of five consecutive sessions of Faith Explored, beginning Sunday, May 28, from 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM, facilitated by Earle Briard.

Is Scripture alone the basis for our faith and practice?  What about church traditions? What is the meaning of faith? Can we merit the grace of God?  Is Jesus Christ the only way to Heaven?  Why is God “jealous” of His glory?

These foundational principles of our faith are critical for us to appreciate and understand.  And in our present era of doctrinal decay and compromise we need to remind ourselves once again of the unchanging standards of our holy and great God.
