Foundations are critically important–they are the chief means of support no matter what kind of structure you are building–be it a tower, bridge, or house. In His parable of the wise and foolish builders in Matthew chapter 7, Jesus describes two men who each built a house. The wise builder builds on rock and the foolish builder on sand. Both houses are hit by a storm, but only the one build on rock–on a solid foundation –remained standing. In 1 Corinthians 3:10 the Apostle Paul writes; “According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building on it. Each builder must choose with care how to build on it. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one that has been laid; that foundation is Jesus Christ.”
These words are so important for us! Living Waters Anglican Fellowship is a new church community that we are building in Kingston, in partnership with God. Paul makes it very clear that the kind of church we’re called to build needs to have a strong and secure foundation–it needs to be founded firmly on the person and work of Jesus. If we build on any other foundation–if we make this church about anything other than Jesus and His word–we’ll be like the guy who built his house on sand–when the storms come–when challenges and hardships hit us–the church will fall!
This series will look at ten building blocks from the life of Nehemiah that can help strengthen our hands for this good work, and ensure that we build this church and our lives on a solid foundation.
“Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good on me; as also the king’s words that he had spoken to me. And they said, ‘Let us rise up and build.’So they strengthened their hands for this good work.”
